What a great idea it was to establish a holiday in order to create a long weekend in August! If there's going to be a chance for beautiful weather here, it'd be about now. This holiday is not nationwide, and of course, goes by different names in different parts of Canada.
Today, we decided to check out the blackberries on the opposite side of the river. From the Surrey side, we can look directly across the Fraser River at our apartment building and our downtown New Westminster neighbourhood.
There's a small, out-of-the way park over there. Lots of dog owners use it to give their pets a little exercise and there's not much else, no picnic tables or other facilities. Yet, it has a short trail area we remembered as being blackberry territory.
So we left with a small bucket. We found some berries and most with sun exposure were ready. Yet, those damned bushes surely make picking a dangerous chore. We found an apple tree along the river which must have been planted at one point in time. Although it is not taken care of, we picked a few usable fruit.
Being out in the sun was great and I guess the few scratches were worth the effort. Who can argue with free food?
